Gardening Gurus!

On Thursday we were lucky enough to have some parents help us plant our beans seeds. We had a great time wearing gardening gloves, placing soil in our bean pot and then watering the bean seed. In class we completed 'The Lifecycle of a Bean' and wrote amazing recounts on what we had done that morning. A big thank you to the parents from 1P and 1L that kindly offered their time to help us. Check out some of the photos from our morning, we are gardening gurus in Year 1!

Friday Art

On Friday we were very lucky to have Jordanna (Tilly's Mum) back in our class to complete another session of Art with us. The children completed their self portraits and drew something that they love or enjoy doing. A huge thanks to Jordanna for sharing your artistic talent with us, we had a great afternoon and our Artwork looks amazing!

Food Garden Volunteers

Good afternoon parents,

We are looking to start our Food Garden bean plants this week and would love if any parents could come in and help make the newspaper pots to plant our bean seeds into. We would also require some assistance to put the seeds into the soil.

We will require a few parents on Wednesday morning (18th May) from 8.50am - 9.15 am to help construct the newspaper pots in the wet area.

Thursday will be our planting day. If you could assist with this from 9.05am - 9.30 am approx. that would be very helpful. Some hands might get dirty - but we have soap :)

If you are able to assist with either Wednesday or Thursday morning, after drop off, please email me.

We are looking forward to growing some delicious broad beans!

Think Mental Math Books

Good evening parents,

Thank you for all of those people who made sure their children handed in and completed the first unit of their Think Mental Math books on Friday. If for some reason they did not get to me by last Friday, could you please hand them in ASAP.

It was great to see all of the children's math understanding represented in their Think Mental's Math book. Some children also completed the second unit with great eagerness. However I would like to ensure the concepts are taught adequately in class so please refrain from letting your child complete more than the set amount.

It's not very often the teacher has to ask children to stop doing homework :)

This next fortnight (Weeks 4 and 5) the children are required to complete Unit 2 ONLY. It will be due back to class on Friday 27th of May.

In conjunction with the Think Mental Math books, the children are also encouraged to complete:

- Reading every night - to help their fluency and comprehension
- Sight words - to be able to both read and spell them
- Mathletics tasks - set according to the concept we are learning
- Reading Eggs activities - set in relation to their reading level and spelling group

We are learning lots in Year One and we thank you for your ongoing support!

This is just a friendly reminder that the children's Think Mental Math books are due in tomorrow.

Thank you to all those people who have handed in their books early.

Please make sure your child has completed unit 1 (pages 4-6) and it has been marked with a positive comment to say how proud you are!

The children have been very excited to complete their Math 'home work' and we are looking forward to seeing how they went!

Please ensure you are early tomorrow as we have our assembly.

See you tomorrow

Fun Run

On Friday afternoon the whole school participated in the Fun Run to raise money for the Year Six Camp. We had lots of fun collecting our stamps after each lap and we even got an icy pole at the end. A big thank you to Cass Harslett and Kat Marsland for your awesome help stamping the charts.
If you have not already could you please bring in your Fun Run money and form. If you have misplaced your form, please collect one from the office.

Have a lovely night.

Place Value Fun in Year One!

Over the last week and half we have been learning about place value and ways we can represent numbers using popsticks and MAB blocks. We have explored this concept using games, manipulative materials and Mathletic activities. The children enjoyed playing the game 'Roll and Collect' using popsticks and then bundling the popsticks once they reached ten. The person who had the largest number at the end was the winner.

The children found out that place value means the value of a digit within a number, for example we found out that the number 52 is made up of 5 tens and 2 ones. We even explored some numbers into the hundreds! I have included the link to one of the games we enjoyed playing. http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/placevalue/fruit_shoot_place_value.htm
