Parent Help
Good afternoon Parents,
On Thursday this week, 1st December, the children will be visited by Lisa from Bunnings in Busselton. She will be assisting us in making a pencil box for our Christmas craft that the children will decorate at a later date.
I'm asking any parents available on Thursday 1st December at 10am after the Year 3 performance assembly, to come and help with some (gulp) hammering and gluing of wooden pieces to create a pencil box. We require about 5 parent helpers to help on the day.
We are also making Christmas decorations this Friday and require another four parent helpers from 1.30pm till the end of the day.
If you are available to help on either Thursday or Friday, please email me asap on: lissiman.karla@cathednet.wa.edu.au
Kind regards
Karla Lissiman

Fantastic Fractions!
This week we have been focusing on fractions in Maths. We learnt all about halves and quarters and also how to write them, which is quite tricky! During the week we did some fun activities where we made fraction sundaes, played roll a fraction and today we made delicious fraction fairy bread. We had to cut our piece of fairy bread into halves and quarters. At the start of each Maths session we enjoyed singing a song about fractions which can be found at the following link. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DnFrOetuUKg We had so much fun learning about fractions!

Magic Maths
Over the past two weeks we have been focusing on addition and subtraction. We have been working on improving our mental mathematics skills using a variety of strategies including think big count small, friends of 10, doubles and near doubles to mentally solve addition and subtraction sums up to 20. The children have enjoyed playing some addition and subtraction board games, friends of 10 snap, and a roll and solve activity. We have enjoyed beginning our Math sessions with addition and subtraction games on the interactive whiteboard. Here is the link if your child would like to play some of these games at home. Please note that the website only works on a computer and not on an iPad. http://www.arcademics.com Here are some photos of us enjoying playing games improving our addition and subtraction skills.

Our Learning in Term 4
Good afternoon Parents,
This term will be jammed pack and before we know it, it will be over!
This term we will begin by focusing on Fairytales which will be mainly integrated into our English block in the morning. We will be looking at a variety of texts and using an array of comprehension strategies to show our understanding of the text.
Our Writing focus will be Narrative, Persuasive and we will finish with letter writing in the lead up to Christmas.
Grammar and punctuation will be an important part of our writing program this term. We started the term looking at commas, creating comma kings and queens and exploring when we need to use commas in our writing. We will revise capital letters, full stops and learn more about exclamation marks, apostrophes, question marks and quotation marks.
Our Math focus will be a revision of Addition and Subtraction strategies with a focus on using these to solve word problems. We will also be looking at data, place value, fractions, odd and even numbers, skip counting and patterning.
In HASS we will be looking at how we can change spaces within places and how they can be rearranged to suit different purposes and how we can care for these places.
In our Science unit we will be looking at the outcome of changes that occur to every day substances. We will explore physical and chemical changes produces by energy sources eg. heating, melting or freezing.
There are some important dates ahead this term, please write these down in your diaries:
Sunday 23rd October: OLC Festival of Fun starting at 10am - 3pm
Catholic Day/ Student free day: Monday November 7th (Week 5)
Book Week dress up day: Friday 25th November 9am (Week 7)
OLC Award Night: Tuesday 6th December at 6.30pm (Week 9)

Sports Carnival
Yesterday we were blessed with beautiful weather for the children's first day back and our annual Sports Carnival. We eagerly arrived at school with coloured zinc, hair and mascots ready for the big day ahead. Throughout the morning we participated in a variety of different team games and running races. We all tried our very hardest and even if we didn't get ribbon, we still showed wonderful courage, optimism and sportsmanship. A big congratulations to everyone for doing their best and especially to Vinny and Skyla our champion boy and girl for Year One. A huge thank you to Mrs Sinclair for helping us practise and get organised for the day, the parents for cheering for us and the Year 6s who did an excellent job making sure we were ready for all of our events. We were exhausted by the end of the carnival but safe to say we had a great day and can't wait for next year's carnival.

Year One Excursion
Last Friday we were lucky enough to go for an excursion with 1P to Wonnerup House. We started the morning with an exciting bus trip to Busselton and we even got to watch Stuart Little on the way.
When we got there we watched a short video outlining the history of Wonnerup House and learnt about the Layman family who used to live there. After that we got organised into our groups with our fabulous parent helpers and set off to explore the grounds.
We saw the Main House, Stables, Blacksmith Shop, Dairy Kitchen, Old School and Teacher's House. Along the way we had questions to answer about each area, so we were kept very busy looking around to find the answers and also observing all of the interesting old things.
We had a lovely lunch on the beautiful grassed area and then we got to run around, play cricket, do hula hooping and skipping with Mrs Hughes and the Mums.
After that it was time to have a final look around before we headed back to school. We were so exhausted by the time we got back but we had a fantastic time with the other Year One class at Wonnerup House and learning more about school and places in the past. A huge thank you to Prue, Katinka, Kristie and Anita for their amazing help with our groups on the excursion. Come in and check out our awesome recounts that we did this week!

Marvellous Measuring
We are currently focusing on the area of Measurement in Mathematics and we have learning about measuring length using informal units. Last week we learnt about estimating and measuring the length of different items in our classroom using blocks. Today we had a super time using rulers and learning about centimetres to measure the length of lolly snakes. In each group one child keep their snake as it was, one child had a headless snake, one child had a tailless snake and one child had to stretch their snake. The children estimated the length of each snake and then measured and recorded the actual length, remembering to have one end of the snake on the ruler starting at 0cm. We love measuring in Maths!
A few reminders...
Just a few reminders for the next two weeks:

Math Books and Feedback forms
Please ensure Mathematics books are returned tomorrow with the feedback form completed. Thank you to all the parents that returned their child's book today. It's been lovely to read all the positive feedback and comments so far.
Learning Journeys
Next Monday afternoon we have our Learning Journey, please ensure you have written your name down in a time slot on the timetable outside the classroom. The children are very excited to show you their learning!
Excursion
This Friday the 16th Sept we have our excursion to Wonnerup house. Children come as normal in their sports uniform and please send their lunch separately in a clearly labelled plastic bag. We will be having crunch and sip and recess before we leave school.

Our Father's Day Assembly
Today we had our performance assembly for this year. We started by sharing some writing we had done about why we love our Dads. Then we performed the story 'My Dad' by Anthony Browne. We were so clever to remember all the words and actions for the story in front of a huge audience.
I am going to upload the Father's Day video on YouTube early next week as the attachment is too large to email out. Only people with the link and access to our school blogs will be able to view it. If anyone has any concerns please let me know by Tuesday.
A huge thank you to all the parents for the time and effort that was put into organising the children's outfits for today, they all looked amazing and I'm sure you'll agree that they were all super stars on stage!
Lastly a big Happy Father's Day to our awesome Dads! We hope you all have a fabulous day on Sunday and enjoy all the special goodies that have been made for you.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Our Wonderful Wildlife Incursion
On Monday we had an amazing time at our wildlife incursion! We were extermely excited to met some Australian animals and learn many new and interesting facts. We got to pat a bob-tail lizard, a dingo, a koala and two pythons, which some children were even brave enough to have around their necks! We had a wonderful time meeting and learning about where each animal lived, their lifespan, diet and how we can look after them.
On Tuesday morning we did an excellent job writing recounts on this amazing experience. Come into our class to check out our wonderful writing!

Mission Markets
Thank you to those parents that have already donated for our Mission Market stall. I am reposting this as my previous post has mysteriously disappeared.
This year OLC will be celebrating and participating in the Mission Markets on Friday the 12th of August.
This is a wonderful school event that helps raise funds for our Catholic Mission focus and creates a wonderful atmosphere for the children to have a little fun!
In Year 1L we will be running a lolly bag stall so we are asking for donations of a share bag of chocolates or lollies. (Please ensure there are no nuts).
If you are able to also donate some small party bags to make up the lolly bags that would be very much appreciated.
I would ask that all donations for the lolly bags are in by Wednesday 10th August so I can see if more items are needed.
If there are any parents that are willing to help make up the lolly bags on the Thursday 11th of August, that would be wonderful!
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Think Mental Math books
Good afternoon parents,
Thank you to all those people who handed in their Think Mentals book last Friday. The children are doing a great job at completing the two units for the fortnight. Over the next two weeks could you please assist your child in completing unit 7 and 8 and hand it back into class by next Friday 12th of August.
Thank you to all those parents who are giving instant feedback by correcting their children's work. This will be extremely beneficial to developing your chid's mathematical understanding and help them to learn from their errors.
If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me.

We are 100 Days Smarter!
On Tuesday we had a wonderful time celebrating the 100th day of school for the year. The children participated in a variety of fun 'One Hundred' activities including writing about what they have learnt in the last 100 days, what they wish they had 100 of and what they would like to do in 100 days. They drew pictures of what they look like now and what they think they will look like when they are 100 years old. The children also had a great time building cup towers with 100 cups, writing numbers with chalk on the bricks to 100, writing 100 rhyming words, constructing with 100 pieces of Lego and identifying odd and even numbers to 100. After the activities we had a delicious shared lunch with the other Year One class. A huge thanks to all of our wonderful Mums, Dads and Grandparents for contributing a plate to the lunch. We had an absolutely fantastic day wearing our special '100 day' crowns and celebrating being '100 days smarter!'

Math Magicians
We have begun the term consolidating our understanding of place value from Term 2. We have looked at '4 ways to make a number', writing the number, identifying how many hundreds, tens or ones, making the number and writing the number in expanded form. We have also played 'Place Value War' a hands on card where the children have to identify who has the largest number and on Friday we played the board games 'Tricertops Race' and 'Zoo Race' where the children were in pairs and compared numbers in written, expanded and MAB form (blocks). We also learnt a new song about place value this week, which the children love singing at the start of a Mathematics session. I have attached the link for the song and a game that we play on the interactive whiteboard. Check out some of the photos from us playing and learning more about place value.
